Demystifying The Herpes Simplex Virus
Michalis 'BIG Mike' Kotzakolios

Defined Tag:

When one speaks of the herpes simplex virus he or she is actually speaking about 2 separate but similar viruses. This is due to multiple reasons, particularly evolution and the migratory habits of humans over the millennia. However, these two common types of herpes simplex virus still reign dominant in afflicting human beings. These are commonly called simplex 1, or HSV-1, and simplex 2, or HSV-2.

Generally speaking, simplex 1 describes the term "oral herpes," which is primarily on the lips and underside of the lips, and likewise, simplex 2 has reigned on human genitalia. However, even this is changing as more and more cases of simplex 1 are now causing genital herpes due to ignorance of the herpes simplex virus and how it spreads, coupled with a bit of indiscretion during oral sex.

It is estimated that 1 in 5 adults in the United States are infected with either of the two herpes simplex viruses, thus increasing the possibility of contagion with anyone who is sexually active, or simply that kisses another on the lips. While the disease does not always reveal itself on the body for many months or even years, when it does so, the symptoms are rather telling. Blisters, redness, itching, burning, even bleeding and oozing may occur. As this may describe numerous other problems, it is best determined by a doctor.

As yet there is no known cure for the complete elimination of the herpes simplex virus from the body. However, at least 3 prominent and equally effective medicines exist which have proven to be quite effective in stemming the effects of this woe. Doctors recommend that they be utilized as soon as presence of the herpes simplex virus is discovered.

The three medicines in question have been proven to not only aid in diminishing or completely hiding the symptoms, but also of keeping them at bay for years, when properly taken. At times short term use has proven effective, though for but a small amount of time before a recurrence of breakout happens. A long term regimen of these medicines is recommended, sometimes for up to two years or more. However, it should be noted that this treatment -which can be oral, topical, or in special cases, intravenous, is somewhat expensive.

The best means to avoid being infected with the herpes simplex virus -or of infecting another person, is abstention. However, when this is not acceptable, use of a condom is highly encouraged. Prophylactics for men is generally effective unless the disease has spread beyond the penis or vagina, in which case condoms for women are even better, due to the greater amount of surface coverage that they offer.

It should be noted that this is a highly contagious disease, even to the person already infected. This is to say that while spreading of the disease of its own accord is nearly nil, touching the infected area can worsen the situation. First, by touching another part of the body after touching an infected area, the new area, say the face, can become infected and begin showing signs of this within 3 or 4 days. As well, bacteria that exists under the fingernails can be released into the sores and infect them.

For most people, however, suffering from this disease puts little stress on their lifestyle or their lives. As the knowledge of this contagion spreads, the contagion itself will slow, improving everyone's lives.
